Tomorrow is the Day

Dear Friends,

Tomorrow, August 4th is the official publication date for Smoke but No Fire: Convicting the Innocent of Crimes that Never Happened. While COVID-19 has shattered my dreams of in-person book store signings, parties, and opportunities to connect with you up-close and in-person, there are still so many ways you can join me in celebrating and in spreading the good news!

  1. If you haven’t yet and would like to, please buy the book! You can order it from Amazon or from your favorite local independent bookstore (local folks, you know where to go!). Remember, all author proceeds are being donated to projects that support exonerees after their release from prison… so why not buy a couple?
  2. This Wednesday, August 5th at noon, please join me for a virtual lunchtime conversation at LMHQ (Lower Manhattan Headquarters) with the Innocence Project. Registration is FREE.  Grab a sandwich or a cup of coffee, and sign-up to for a lively discussion about my book and wrongful convictions.
  3. Save the date, Sunday, September 20th at 6 pm for a virtual book event at Watchung Booksellers. It’s going to be classic.  The moderator is one of my BFFs from law school and an exceptional criminal defense lawyer.  We definitely know how to talk criminal justice – we’ve been doing it for almost 30 years — while still having a really good time.  Registration link to come!
  4. Check out one of the stops on my podcast tour! Stay tuned for more details about when the podcasts will be airing … or go to my website for up-to-date events information!
  5. Tell a friend or two (or twelve) about the book.  Share on social media.  Shout about the book from the rooftops.  OK, I might be doing that right now, but maybe you want to join me?
  6. Write a review.  Liked what you read? You can post a review on Amazon or GoodReads.  Even a short review makes a HUGE difference to advance the book, which apparently is based on a secret algorithm that no one truly understands but that everyone wants to beat.

I hope that this book will help shine a light on the brokenness of our criminal justice system and help forge a path forward so that one day no innocent person is ever convicted of a crime that never happened in the first place.

I also want to thank you for your support throughout this process. It is truly appreciated.  With so much uncertainty in every corner, we need to stand strong for each other and for justice.

Stay safe and well,
Jessica
